  • Spaniards like to talk and will strike up a conversation with a stranger rather than sit in silence.
  • Spaniards will invite someone to visit their home, but they are just being polite and don’t really expect a visit. A guest accepts the offer but only goes if the host has insisted or given a specific time.
  • Bulls are colorblind. So while red capes are used in bullfighting to make the bull mad, it isn’t the red color that gets a bull’s attention. It’s the movement of the cape that does the trick.
  • Spain has one of the world’s largest fleets (groups) of fishing boats.
  • The guitar is one of Spain’s most popular instruments.
  • Barcelona hosted the Summer Olympic Games in 1992.
  • During the 16th century, Spain was one of the most powerful empires in the world.
  • Spain’s wildlife includes mountain goats, eagles, rabbits, wolves, bears, boars, and lynx.

Flamenco dancer
Flamenco is a form of music, singing, and dance that began in Spain, and many Spaniards adore it. The songs are passionate, the dances are often fast, and the music—played on guitar—has great energy. Originally from the province of Andalucia, flamenco is thought to be a mix of Gypsy, Arab, and Jewish music. Spanish gypsies have kept the tradition alive.
