The flag of Ivory Coast was adopted in 1959. It has vertical bands of orange, white, and green. In one explanation of the flag's symbolism, the orange represents the land and the blood of the people who fought for emancipation; white stands for peace and justice; and green represents hope and the future. In another explanation, orange represents northern savannahs; green symbolizes southern forests; and white binds them in unity.
