The flag of the Netherlands, most recently adopted on 19 February 1937, features three horizontal stripes: red, white, and blue. Originally, the red in the flag was orangein honor of the prince of Orange, the political leader of the Netherlandsand the white and blue were lighter, being colors of the prince's coat of arms. However, the flag gradually changed to the red-white-blue tricolor because the orange and blue were too faint to notice in battle, especially on the sea. The colors of bright vermilion (red), white, and cobalt blue were made official by royal decree in 1937.
